Safe Injecting Room trial: Letting the voice of our members be heard

In this month’s Journal we provide some important context to the current public debate on the efficacy of the Medically Supervised Injecting Room trial in North Richmond.

In April, TPAV carried out a survey of members in the Yarra PSA on their experiences policing the North Richmond streets both prior to the MSIR trial, and in the year since it was launched.

The results of the survey, which are detailed inside, indicate crime rates and the workload of police has increased since the MSIR’s inception, and improvements need to be implemented in the final year of the two-year trial, in order to improve policing and public outcomes.

Rammer now in the slammer

We also assess the adequacy of new ramming laws, which were introduced by the state government last year following a prolonged TPAV campaign highlighting the gravity of the problem and its impact on the health and safety of our members.

The first case to trigger the mandatory sentencing has recently passed through the courts. Inside we review the sentence and secretary Wayne Gatt speaks about the need for financial sanctions to be passed on to offenders by the courts in order to help pay for the damage caused to police vehicles.

New financial year

As we prepare to enter the new financial year, the Journal provides some timely tax guidance for members courtesy of the Australian Tax Office. Members should be across this valuable information before lodging their tax return.

We also take you through a series of new financial year benefits for members, negotiated during the last EBA, along with game-changing improvements to members’ superannuation, something we’ve proudly advocated for some time, which come into effect from 1 July.

Angela Taylor fun run/walk

In this edition we also capture all the action from a poignant day on the Victorian policing calendar – the Angela Taylor Memorial Run.

Albert Park Lake again played host to hundreds of runners and walkers, who helped to raise money for The Blue Ribbon Foundation, in honour of Angela, who died from injuries suffered in the 1986 Russell Street bombing.
